IP Address (also known as Internet Protocol Number): A unique, numeric identifier used to specify hosts and networks. IPⁱ Addresses, or Internet Protocol (IP) numbers, are part of a global, standardized scheme for identifying machines that are connected to the Internet. There are two forms of IP Addresses: IPv4ⁱ (q.v.) and IPv6ⁱ (q.v.). IP Addresses are allocated by the Number Resource Organizationⁱ (q.v.)
