.cat - It is a sTLD addressed to serve the needs of the Catalan speaking community in the Internet. It was approved by ICANN on September 16th 2005 and started its operations on February 13th 2006.
The domain is operated by Fundació puntCAT http://domini.cat/, a non for profit foundation based in Barcelona (Europe) and participated, among others, by Institut d'Estudis Catalans (Catalan National Academy),
Catalan Corporation for Radio and TV and the Catalan chapter of the Internet Society.
Catalan is a language derived from Latin (like Italian, French, Spanish or Portuguese) whose first written texts may be traced back to the
XII-XIII centuries when it fully substituted Latin in literature, legal, historical and administrative documents. Today it is spoken by more than
10 million people, basically in the eastern part of the Iberian Peninsula, Balearic Islands and eastern and northeastern side of the
Pyrenees range. It may not seem a lot compared to the most spoken languages but it has more active speakers than, for instance, any of the
Scandinavian and Baltic languages and several central and eastern European languages. Catalan speakers are today active Internet users and
are involved in many activities, either locally or worldwide, non-profit or for-profit.
.cat sTLD offers Catalan IDN characters since the first day of operation (Feb 13th 2006) and has achieved 19000 domains and more than 3,5 million
web pages in its first 9 months of existence.
